Dr. Shawanda Corbett

Biography
Shawanda Corbett is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores what constitutes a 'complete body' through the lens of cyborg theory. Inspired by Donna Haraway's "A Cyborg Manifesto" and authors like Octavia E. Butler, her multimedia works transcend boundaries between organic/synthetic, human/animal, and physical/non-physical. Employing ceramics, photography, painting, dance, film, and performance, Corbett creates immersive experiences that challenge viewers' perspectives on ethnicity, class, social stratification, and shared humanity.
Corbett's ceramic vessels metaphorically represent the body, investigating identity, vulnerability, and resilience. Her live and filmed performances integrate theatre, choreography, and filmmaking to transport audiences into alternate realities that question societal norms. Embracing cyborg theory's emphasis on hybridity, her multifaceted practice blurs lines between art and life, provoking audiences to engage with complex social and political issues.
